Me and Richard Jeni
A lot of people have the notion that stand-up comedians like to watch other comedians. And they think that when we do, we laugh. We usually don’t. Usually we just sit in the back of the room half listening and roll our eyes at the hack premises. And the hack punchlines.
When I was just getting my feet wet in this business I was asked to MC/open for Richard Jeni for a week at Comedy Works in Denver. Opening meant I was the first guy who does 15 minutes up front. MC/openers are usually, but not always, the least experienced of the comics on the bill. I was the least experienced of the acts on this particular bill.
Anyway, I opened for Richard for 7 shows. The room was sold out and it was standing room only for me. I could have hung out in the green room and lounged on a tattered couch as I did many times before and since, but I chose to stand and watch Rich. His style was nothing like mine but I learned so much in that week. About how to grab a crowd and take them on a roller coaster ride. And I laughed.
But it wasn’t just his stand up. It was him. He was polite, friendly and encouraging to me, the low man on the totem pole. He didn’t have to be, but he was. It was part of his nature. We saw each other and talked many times after our first encounter.
Now he’s gone. On the wall at Laff’s Comedy Club in Tucson, AZ is a headshot of Richard. He wrote, “Tucson is a nice place, why did Jo Jo leave? Richard Jeni” My question is, “Why did Richard leave?”
We weren’t friends per se, we hadn’t talked in years, but I will miss him.
Goodbye, Richard.
